Saddle Fitting Consultation

Sharon Eld – Saddle Fitter

A saddle fitting consultation is an essential process in ensuring both horse and rider achieve optimal comfort, balance, and performance. Ill-fitting saddles can lead to a range of issues, including back pain, restricted movement, and behavioural problems in the horse, as well as discomfort and instability for the rider. A professional saddle fitter evaluates multiple factors to determine the most suitable saddle for the partnership.

The consultation typically begins with an assessment of the horse at rest. The fitter examines conformation, muscle development, and any asymmetries, as these directly influence saddle fit. This is followed by observing the horse in hand, allowing the fitter to identify movement patterns and areas of tension or restriction. The rider’s position and balance are also carefully considered, as their posture affects how weight is distributed through the saddle.

Next, the saddle itself is assessed. The fitter checks tree width, panel contact, gullet clearance, and overall balance on the horse’s back. Adjustments may be made on-site if the saddle allows, such as gullet bar changes, flocking modifications, or alternative saddles may be suggested. During this stage, the rider often mounts to ensure the fit works dynamically, not just statically.

A key part of the consultation is education. The fitter explains their findings and offers guidance on maintenance, as saddle fit can change over time due to the horse’s conditioning, age, or workload. Regular check-ups are recommended to maintain optimal fit.

Ultimately, a well-fitted saddle supports the horse’s freedom of movement and the rider’s effectiveness, contributing to improved welfare, performance, and harmony between horse and rider.
