Routine Saddle Fitting

Sharon Eld – Saddle Fitter

Routine saddle fitting is a vital aspect of equine care, ensuring the ongoing comfort, performance, and wellbeing of both horse and rider.

Unlike a one-time fitting, routine checks recognise that a horse’s shape can change significantly over time due to factors such as age, fitness, workload, and seasonal condition. Regular assessments help to identify subtle changes before they develop into discomfort or injury.

During a routine fitting, the fitter begins by reassessing the horse’s current condition. Changes in muscle development, weight, or posture are carefully noted, as these can all affect how the saddle sits and distributes pressure. Even minor fluctuations can alter the balance of the saddle, leading to uneven weight distribution or pressure points.

The saddle itself is then evaluated. The fitter checks key areas such as tree width, panel contact, and gullet clearance to ensure the saddle remains correctly aligned with the horse’s back. Signs of wear in the flocking or structural changes in the saddle are also considered, as these can impact fit over time. Adjustments, such as re-flocking, may be recommended to restore balance and comfort.

Observation in motion is another crucial step. Watching the horse being ridden allows the fitter to assess how the saddle performs dynamically and whether it supports free, unrestricted movement. The rider’s position is also reviewed, as imbalances can influence saddle fit.

Routine fitting not only enhances performance but also plays a preventative role, reducing the risk of injury and promoting long-term soundness.
